Clarets bounce back from Cup exit with League victory.

Writes Matt Lee

Tom Wraight put the Clarets ahead midway through the first half as he reacted quickly to convert from close range after his penalty was saved; Amos Nasha increased City’s lead early in the second half, getting a deft touch to wrong-foot the Gloucester City.

Arriving in Essex with a nervy defence, Gloucester gave City a number of chances to open the scoring early on.

The Clarets started the brighter of the two sides as debutant Adrian Cascaval came close; but the Moldovan’s flicked shot went just wide of Joseph Wollacott’s goal. Chelmsford came close again when Tom Wraight controlled Joe Anderson’s direct ball well. The tricky winger passed inside to tee Giles inside the box, but his strike partner’s header was saved by Wallacott when it seemed destined to nestle in the top corner.

Anthony Church also came close as he reacted well to connect with Matt Young’s driven cross, although his effort lacked enough power to trouble the Gloucester ‘keeper.

But the hosts were handed a golden chance to take the lead when Sam Avery wiped the floor with Giles marginally inside the penalty area. Wraight had his initial spot-kick saved but made no mistake with his second attempt as he stabbed home from close range on 27 minutes.

Shocked by the opening goal, Gloucester almost conceded a second two minutes later; however, Giles could only watch as he dragged a shot wide of the post after skipping past his marker.

Five minutes into the second half Chelmsford added to their tally. Chez Isaac delivered a cross into the box which Nasha connected with, although the midfielder’s attempt was aided across the line with the assistance of a final touch from Avery.

Nasha could have had a second shortly after as he stormed forward after winning the ball, but his powerless strike led to a tame save from Wallacott.

Jake Jackson provided a rare sign of attacking intent from the visitors just past the hour-mark, but his effort was comfortably saved by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

The visitors could have set-up a nervy climax but Matt Liddiard’s strong effort went high and wide after the Gloucester man was picked out unmarked.

Giles came close to getting a goal for his efforts but missed out on small margins. The winger had his shot blocked after he reeled onto Wraight’s pull-back; moments later he dragged a low effort wide after skipping past his marker with ease.

Despite having a few spells of prolonged possession late in the second half, the Tigers were unable to turn around the deficit as Chelmsford held on to win 2-0.
