CHELMSFORD CITY crashed out of the Essex Senior Cup at the Quarter Final stage at the hands of current holders Concord Rangers.

With both sides naming a strong starting eleven it looked like a fiercely competitive Quarter Final tie was in order, but it was anything but as the Beach Boys raced into an early two-goal lead on a bitterly cold night.

Lewis Taaffe opened the scoring after just 17 minutes despite City ‘keeper Tim Brown palming away Steve Cawley’s initial one-on-one shot, leaving Taaffe to slide in and put City on the back foot.

Their advantage was soon doubled seven minutes later when ex-Claret Max Cornhill nodded in Ben Greenhalgh’s pin-point cross, leaving Mark Hawkes’s side with an uphill battle that they failed to overcome, despite an improved second-half, thus succumbing the Clarets to a third straight defeat in all competitions.

The result meant that Concord, who beat Billericay Town 5-0 in last season’s final, will be in the hat for the semi-final draw that will be made live on BBC Essex after the conclusion of all Quarter Final ties, which is anticipated to be early February.
