WFA Cup 65 Round 2 V Norwich

OVER 65s WALKING FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CUP – ROUND 2

CHELMSFORD CITY v NORWICH

Chelmsford welcomed the Norwich Over 65s team to Melbourne Park to contest the second round of the WFA Cup. We beat Bexley in the first round.

Team: Christ Jullings (GK), Jim Prophet, John Stratton, George Keogh, Colin Haydon, Kevan Anderson, Terry Buck (Captain).

Norwich arrived with a team with a very good reputation and this was also going to be a difficult game for The Clarets. We played them in same competition last year away and lost 2-1. The game kicked off for the first period of twenty minutes with neither team showing any obvious signs of dominating the game. After three minutes the first real chance fell to Chelmsford. A well aimed but slightly heavy pass to Terry down the left hand side. The ball was always running away and despite a valiant effort to control the ball and take a shot the ball slipped well wide of the Norwich goal. The next chance fell to Colin out on the right side of midfield, struck a shot, which although goal bound was always rising, and over the Norwich crossbar. It was obvious that the Norwich goalkeeper was on top of the game after other efforts were well saved.

GOAL… After 10 minutes a misdirected pass out of midfield by Colin saw a Norwich player latch onto the ball and after a short ‘run’ slipped the ball comfortably, low past an exposed Chris in the Chelmsford goal.

Terry left the field to be replaced by Kevan.

This goal changed the tempo of the game clearly into Norwich’s favour and although Colin struggled hard in the Chelmsford midfield was unable to create any telling shots on the Norwich goal. Norwich excellent man marking frustrated The Clarets who struggled to find a free team member to pass to. The closest chance came when Kevan was fouled outside the Norwich area but the resulting free kick was struck wide.

With 16 minutes gone a strong shot/pass across the Norwich goal saw the goalkeeper make a diving save, however it was adjudged by the referee that the keeper’s hand had been outside of the area and a penalty awarded. The decision was not hotly contested by Norwich and Colin stepped up to take the penalty. Opting for power rather than placement the Norwich goalkeeper atoned for his error denying The Clarets a goal. It was suggested that the goalkeeper should also have received a blue card for the infringement, which could well have made a vast difference to the resulting penalty. However….

HALF TIME: Chelmsford 0 : Norwich 1

Terry back on for John and the game resumed. Much of the same dominance now by Norwich and sadly another loose pass by Kevan saw Norwich increase their lead to two goals slipping the ball past the Chris exposed again.

Two minutes later Norwich again came close with a rising shot over the Chelmsford goal only narrowly clearing the bar. Shortly after following a Norwich corner the ball was struck firmly across Chris from his left only narrowly missing the left hand post.

Terry off again after a heavy shoulder barge from their no. 10 and John returns. Chris now faces a well-hit free kick and makes a great save to his right hand side. Terry now returns with Kevan making way.

Norwich continue dominating the game bringing another good save from Chris with a point blank save.

FULL TIME SCORE: Chelmsford 0 : 2 Norwich

A disappointing result from Chelmsford.
Colin as usual working his socks off was unable to lay off his usual good passes. Chris did well in goal. Jim was shackled in the defence, unable to assist Colin as he usually does so well. John and George were pretty solid at he back, and Kevin and Terry had very little chances other than those noted.
Were we robbed by a refereeing decision or 2? Maybe… but no excuses.
The 7 players who took part should be praised for competing against a well organised Norwich side who played really well against us in a hard fought game and without doubt Norwich were the better team on the day.

Onwards and upwards guys, next 65 is on 6th August in the league where we will have 2 teams.
