WFU Essex knockout National Tournament

Many thanks to our hosts Little Oakley for their usual hospitality in holding the first round of the WFU 65+ knockout cup. Four teams competed in a round robin tournament to provide the Essex team who would progress to the next round.

Squad: Chris Jullings (GK), George Keogh, Jim Prophet, Colin Haydon, Kevan Anderson, Alec Rose, Bill Harvey, Terry Buck (C).

Harwich Hornets 0 : 4 Chelmsford City
The Clarets got off to a great start with a solid performance against Harwich. A fine strike by Colin opened the scoring early on and then a precise pass from George found Jim who unleashed an unstoppable long range effort to give us a 2 goal lead at the break. The second half was more of the same from City with the Harwich keeper making saves from George, Kevan & Colin before Alec grabbed a third and then Colin’s second of the match saw us run out comfortable winners.

Romford 0 : 2 Chelmsford City
City found it difficult to get a head of steam up against Romford and on several occasions Chris in goal had to save well to keep another clean sheet. Billy was industrious throughout before Kevan gave us the lead midway through the first half. Terry then struck to double our lead in the second half with a fine opportunist goal.

Little Oakley 1 : 1 Chelmsford City
We knew before the kick off that this was the deciding match as both teams had maximum points from their first two games and it was winner-take-all to go through to the next round. Little Oakley struck first when a fierce shot just evaded Chris’s dive to sneak into the bottom corner. A goal down at half time, City were competing well when Chris’s momentum took him outside the area but he redeemed himself with a fine save down to his left from the resulting penalty. Shortly afterwards Alec received a two minute blue card but a composed City played keep ball until passes were exchanged between Jim & Terry who found Colin wide on the right to fire past the keeper. With no further score the teams had a break before the 5 minutes each way extra time decider.

Little Oakley 0 : 1 Chelmsford City (extra time decider)
This was just as hard fought between these two regular rivals with the game played at a fast pace from start to finish. Billy came close to breaking the deadlock but with both keepers in fine form and defences blocking shots at both ends it was looking as if penalties would be need to separate the sides. With a couple of minutes left on the clock the ball broke to Kevan whose shot was parried by the keeper directly into the path of Colin who never looked liked missing. Despite Oakley pressing non stop City saw the game out without giving the opposition any further clear chances.

The Clarets deservedly go through to the next round and having only conceded one goal throughout the mornings play they are proving difficult to beat. They grew into the tournament and played some great football, particularly when really needed against Little Oakley and they now await news of their opponents in the next round. A great all round performance from the whole team!

George Keogh
