Fantastic Fenwick secures the points for Clarets

Scott Fenwick scored a stunning volley on his home debut to give Chelmsford City a much needed win against Concord Rangers at the Melbourne Community Stadium as Rod Stringer's side target the play-offs.

Writes Dan Deakins...

While Fenwick's overhead kick made the difference, Stringer wasn't pleased with the manor of the performance despite having the majority of possession.

"I thought we made very hard work of the performance", stated Stringer, "I said to them at half time we needed to be more clinical, we needed more penetration, we need to be more exciting on the ball. We were playing a lot of keep-ball, but you're never going to hurt a team by keeping the ball unless you've got that end product and that's what we were missing today. We were missing that final ball out of midfield or that decent delivery".

Chelmsford exhibited near constant possession and pressure in the first half with their three at the back system, creating natural width and crossing positions and stretching the Concord Rangers defence.

City didn't take long to open the scoring, as new signing Fenwick smashed an overhead kick into the top corner from a left-wing cross in the 11th-minute.

The Clarets operated a high intensity pressing game throughout the first half, with the midfield three of Christopher Smith, Taylor Miles and Jonathan Giles not allowing the Concord Rangers defence or midfield any time on the ball. Giles seemed to be playing a dual role - centre-mid while defending and number 10 supporting Fenwick and Shaun Batt when attacking.

Batt almost notched City's second in the 37th-minute, bulldozing a path through the Rangers defence and lashing a shot towards the top corner but Louis Wells made the save.

Rangers had far more impetus to their play in the second half and Femi Akinwande nearly equalised in the 60th-minute, drilling a low shot across Sam Beasant's goal.

Chelmsford got a rare second half sight of goal in the 79th-minute, as Christopher Dickson played in Green, only for the substitute to smash an uncontrolled shot into the stands.

The last 10-minutes were in total contrast to Chelsmford's early control. The game became sloppy and stretched as Rangers occasionally threatened an equaliser.

Rangers earned a corner in the final moments, but Billy Roast's header flew well over the bar.
