Clarets bounce-back with victory over Hawks

Chelmsford City returned to winning ways in the League with a 2-0 win at Whitehawk.

Matthew Johnson’s contender for goal of the season put the Clarets on their way to a victory after just twelve minutes, but three minutes later Christopher Dickson slotted beyond Seny Dieng to quickly double the visitors’ lead.

The Clarets came close to opening the scoring twice in the first five minutes. A deep corner bobbled off Michael Spillane before the hosts calmly cleared. Then, moments later, a driven cross from Craig Braham-Barrett from the left was dummied by Lee Barnard but Dickson’s close-range shot was straight at Dieng and pushed round the post.

Johnson put the Clarets ahead in an impressive manner as he scored a contender for Goal of the Season. The midfielder waited for a loose ball to reach him before unleashing a half-volleyed strike beyond Dieng into the top left corner.

Dickson doubled the visitors’ lead three minutes later as the Clarets won the ball back in midfield. Lee Barnard received the ball and waited before delivering a weighted pass for Dickson to run onto, the experienced striker burst forward and kept his composure as he nestled a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

The Clarets should have extended their early lead further when Dickson pulled the ball back from the by-line to Braham-Barrett, however the wing-back blazed over from close range with the assistance of a deflection.

Chelmsford proved unable to further their advantage in the second half as Whitehawk took control of possession. Kyjuon Marsh-Brown cut inside when he was on the by-line, however his side movement was too much and his cross flew into the side-netting. The winger again found space moments later but this time his cross was held by Sam Beasant. The hosts came close again when Michael Cain’s effort from the edge-of-the-box struck Beasant’s chest, but it was hastily cleared away by Spillane.

Whitehawk’s extended spell of pressure saw them continue to threaten the Chelmsford goal. On-loan midfielder Sam Chaney squirmed his way into some space before then being robbed of the ball by Scott Davies. Seconds later Spillane was forced into throwing his body in front of a driven shot as the hosts continued to press.

Marsh-Brown almost engineered a lifeline when he reacted quickest to a loose ball. The speedy winger cut inside on the left-side of the box, but his fierce shot flew wide of Chaney.

Having been forced to substitute Barnard midway through the first half due to injury, Rod Stringer was then forced into taking Dickson off as the striker was held up with what appeared to be a knock.

Despite the hosts’ increased pressure, the first half strikes from Johnson and Dickson remained enough for the Clarets to beat the League’s basement side and return to winning ways in the League.
