Oxford City leave Clarets frustrated in League
Oxford City took momentum from their win over Colchester United in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend by winning their first game since August, defeating promotion-hunting Chelmsford City 2-1.
The visitors took a shock lead after 13 minutes. Craig Braham-Barrett attempted to engineer an attack down the left but lost possession to Mamadou Fofana. The midfielder then passed wide to Matt Paterson who had his drilled cross smashed home by Dave Pearce from close range.
City almost found themselves level moments later when Assombalonga raced through, but the striker could only manage a deep cross to Matt Johnson who then shot well wide. Daniel Green then came close to creating a goal, winning a corner, but as the set-piece was headed out to him he dragged an effort wide.
The visitors searched for a second goal to consolidate their lead, with Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sinclair coming close, but an increased advantage eluded them.
City boss Rod Stringer made a change at half-time to inspire the Clarets, with Scott Davies replacing Daniel Green at the interval. Davies’ introduction initially signalled a sense of creativity, with the midfielder splicing the Oxford defence with his passing ability.
But the Clarets were once again made to pay for poor passing when Braham-Barrett’s attempted cross was blocked, the visitors broke away and Paterson slid the ball wide to Godfrey Poku who poked beyond Beasant to double the visitors’ lead.
Chelmsford pulled a goal back ten minutes later, though, when Max Porter bundled home a long throw to give the Clarets a lifeline.
The hosts continued to look for an equaliser, but Porter and substitute Chris Dickson were both left ruining missed chances as time ran out.
Chelmsford had two chances to score in the final five minutes as the Clarets created goal-line scrambles, Dickson then stabbed over from just a few yards as Chelmsford continued to demand a goal.
But it was not to be as Oxford City held on with miraculous defending to secure all three points in Essex.
