Classy Clarets defeat Wealdstone
Goals from Chris Dickson and Lee Barnard secured a perfect bounce-back following Monday night's loss to St Albans City.
Chris Dickson’s goal midway through the first-half set Chelmsford on their way to a 2-0 win at Wealdstone.
The City striker reeled onto a Michael West through-ball and unleashed a fizzing shot into the bottom corner from the edge-of-the-box.
Lee Barnard doubled City’s advantage as he weaved his way into the box, being fouled on his way, and the Clarets striker executed another excellent penalty to get his third goal of the season.
Gordon Bartlett granted a home debut to new signing Aron Pollock, with the on-loan Leyton Orient defender starting in the place of former Chelmsford player Josh Hill.
The visitors made an instant threat on-goal on three minutes, however Christopher Bush could only watch as his freekick struck the crossbar.
City were denied by the crossbar moments later when Christopher Dickson’s lob beat Jonathan North, only for the City striker’s audacious attempt to be denied by the woodwork.
The hosts had loud claims for a penalty when Elliot Omozusi’s back-pass was short for Sam Beasant. Then Bush fumbled around in the box and appeared to bring down Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick, however no foul was given.
Whistler Ryan Atkin had a big decision to make when Scott Davies and Ciaron Brown went sliding in on each other in a fifty-fifty challenge, however the City midfielder got away with his slightly late challenge as Brown went into the book - much to the disgust of the Wealdstone supporters.
Wealdstone should have taken the lead early in the second half when Elliot Benyon found plenty of space on the edge of the six-yard box. However the Stones striker hurried his shot from close range and saw his shot saved well by Beasant.
Chelmsford had a chance of their own when Dickson’s darting run saw him through on-goal. The City striker pulled the ball back to Lee Barnard and a fiercely driven low shot looked destined for the bottom corner, but debutant Pollock did well to turn the ball away off the line.
But Dickson took control of the game on 57 minutes as he latched onto West’s through-ball, striking well into the bottom corner.
Wealdstone briefly threatened following Chelmsford’s opener and looked for an equaliser as Matthew Whichelow and Ricky Wellard came on for Daniel Fitchett and Daniel Green.
But a moment of poor defending from Whichelow saw Barnard cut inside before being knocked down to the ground by the former City player, leaving Ryan Atkin pointing to the spot for a Chelmsford spot-kick. Barnard stepped up, having been fouled, and duly dispatched the spot-kick into the left of the goal to score his third of the season.
West almost extended the visitors’ lead late-on, however a fine fingertip save from North denied the Clarets a third.
Whichelow’s curling freekick in injury time almost pulled a goal back for the hosts, but it went wide of the frame as Chelmsford returned to Essex with all three points.
