Clarets victorious in League opener

Chelmsford City won their first opening League game of the season for the first time since 2010 with a 2-0 win over Gloucester City.

Kudus Oyenuga’s goal on two minutes put the Clarets in the ascendancy as he took advantage of a lapse in concentration. The result was then confirmed three minutes from time as the home debutant powered a header beyond the helpless Alex Harris.

Rod Stringer prepared for the League opener already knowing that Max Porter (toe) and Shaun Batt would be unavailable to play, however the Clarets boss fielded a strong team as he gave home debuts to seven of his summer signings.

The visitors also had their own selection problems, however, as full-back Lewis Hall and Tom Webb were forced out through injuries.

Oyenuga put the Clarets one-nil ahead after just two minutes as he latched onto a loose ball. The City striker noticed Chris Bush’s long-throw sneak through the Gloucester defence and Oyenuga made no mistake by rifling home from close range.

The wind made play at the Melbourne Community Stadium turn very slow and broken-up however, as time ran it’s toll, the Clarets began linking up to create more chances.

Matt Johnson’s superb passing caused multiple problems for the visitors as he carved chances together for the Clarets. His through-ball for Oyenuga won the hosts another corner, however Stringer’s side could not capitalise as it was headed away.

Gloucester had a great chance to equalise when miscommunication between Sam Beasant and Anthony Church led to the City goalkeeper weakly punching the ball away. However Scott Davies was on-hand to hook the ball clear at the second chance.

Craig Braham-Barrett’s looping cross to the far post was almost rifled home by West, before Johnson’s through-ball for Oyenuga had too much pace to cause any problems.

The Clarets continued to control the game in the opening stages of the second half, with Chris Bush coming close for the hosts. But the tall central defender could not head home from close range from West’s delivery.

Oyenuga came close to doubling the hosts’ lead in the second half but he was unable to take advantage of Harris’ mistake as he sent a shot wide.

The visitors increased their pressure in the final fifteen minutes and looked the most likely to equalise, but luckily for the Clarets a resolute defensive line kept the scoreline positive.

Rod Stringer brought on Lee Barnard and Jonny Giles in an attempt to improve the current scoreline, and that’s exactly what happened.

Moments after coming on, and with three minutes left on the clock, Giles cut outside on the left wing, sent a cross to the far post where Oyenuga loomed and calmly sent a header into the bottom corner.

Next up for the Clarets is a trip to Welling United on Tuesday night in an attempt to get consecutive wins in the League.
