Five Goal City Cruise to Victory

It was a day of joy for Chris Dickson who scored four as City cruised to a 5-1 victory over Eastbourne Borough at the Melbourne Community Stadium.

The Clarets took the lead inside ten minutes as Elliott Buchanan’s deflected shot sneaked to Chris Dickson who tapped home from just a few yards.

Their lead was eventually doubled on 38 minutes when Dickson grabbed his second goal of the afternoon with a delightful tap-in after lobbing Lewis Carey. The 32-year-old scored a third goal five minutes into the second half before adding a fourth on 77 minutes.

Debutant Louie Theophanous – who was signed by Chelmsford the night before – rounded off the rout with a fifth goal in second half added time.

City boss Rod Stringer made just one change to the starting eleven that fell to a 1-0 defeat to Maidenhead: with Elliott Buchanan returning to the starting line-up as Liam Enver-Marum dropped out of the squad.

The visiting side were forced into an early substitution – after just eight minutes – as Bouwe Bosma went down from a corner and consequently was replaced by Ryan Worrall.

Dickson gave the Clarets seconds later. Elliott Buchanan watched the ball fall to his foot, however his volley failed to trouble Carey – instead it ricocheted off a defender and fell to Dickson who calmly tapped home at the far post.

The hosts should have seen their advantage increased midway through the first half. Robbie Willmott’s excellent delivery from a free-kick spotted Dickson and Michael Spillane, however neither of them could create enough contact to direct the ball over the line.

City doubled their lead on 38 minutes as Dickson used a deft touch to push the ball over Carey on the edge-of-the-box, before tapping home to get his second goal of the afternoon and sixth of the season.

Dickson had a first-half hat-trick denied with four minutes left. The striker found himself through on-goal once again and after tapping past Carey, he thought he had the match ball, however the ball smacked against the post and out.

Nathaniel Pinney should have reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time, however a fine full-stretch save from Ross Fitzsimons denied the striker.

Dickson made amends for his earlier miss by sealing the match ball five minutes into the second half. The striker latched onto a delightful cross and sealed the victory with a simple finish.

Eastbourne had any chances of a comeback cut slim when their manager was sent-off in the aftermath of the Clarets’ third goal.

The visitors scored a consolation goal through Gavin McCallum on 62 minutes. Fitzsimons came for a weak cross which a City defender headed over the shot-stopper, leaving McCallum the easy task of heading into an empty net.

Stringer introduced Theophanous to the Chelmsford city faithful with just over thirty minutes remaining, with the striker looking to grab a goal on his cameo debut.

Dickson scored his fourth goal of the game on 77 minutes by darting through before placing a right-footed shot beyond Carey, making sure all three points stayed in Essex.

There was still time for a final goal, however, as Theophanous put himself on the scoresheet by netting in the third minute of added time.
