Winless Run Goes On as City Held by Weston
CHELMSFORD CITY’s wait for a league win goes on as they drew 0-0 away at struggling Weston-super-Mare.
In a game of few chances for either side Chelmsford had the better of the openings with Elliott Buchanan and Shaun Jeffers both rounding goalkeeper Luke Purnell but failing to hit the target on both occasions.
Weston had an early goal disallowed for offside and Ross Fitzsimons almost gifted the home side a goal when he dropped the ball inside the six yard box from a Weston corner only for Mark Haines to hack clear.
Haines himself came closest to breaking the deadlock for City as his header in the second half was cleared off the line by Aden Baldwin, but Chelmsford were left frustrated as they left the Woodspring Stadium with yet another draw.
The result extended City’s wait for a league win to seven games as they failed to break down a side that had not won at home in the league since the opening day of the season and sat second from bottom going into the game.
Following their 1-0 FA Trophy win against Hitchin Town last weekend Rod Stringer made two changes to his starting line up with Max Cornhill and Matt Young coming in for Max Porter and Jake Reid, with Anthony Church still missing through work commitments.
Chelmsford created the first opportunity of the game when Elliot Buchanan was played in by Shaun Jeffers. The former Margate man beat Luke Purnell to the ball but was pushed too wide to get a shot away with Bagasan Graham's cross failing to trouble the home side.
Weston had picked up just one win in their last 17 league games after starting the season by winning their opening three, and they felt they should have taken an early lead when Bradley Ash was put through on goal, beating Ross Fitzsimons only for the linesman to flag him offside.
The Clarets were struggling to get behind the hosts' back line and get a clear chance on goal with a number of under-hit crosses from both flanks failing the trouble the Weston defence.
Seagull’s Captain, Dayle Grubb, came closest to breaking the deadlock midway through the half when he skipped away from Ashley Miller with his low and hard strike having to be tipped around the post by Ross Fitzsimons.
Minutes later and debutante, Gethyn Hill, hit one with the outside of his boot straight down the throat of Fitzsimons and City’s ‘keeper almost handed Weston the lead when he dropped a Grubb corner in the six-yard box with Mark Haines fortunately on hand to hack clear before the home side could turn it in.
Both sides made for a lightning quick start to the second period with Weston going close when Lloyd Humphries first time shot flew just over the bar within 20 seconds of the restart. Chelmsford went even closer moments later when Haines was picked out by a Robbie Willmott corner and saw his header on goal cleared off the line by Aden Baldwin.
After the quick start to the half the game settled back down and with 20 minutes remaining Rod Stringer brought on new-signing Kane Haysman to replace Graham as Chelmsford went in search of the opening goal which would most likely prove to be the winner.
And the visitors came ever so close to finding it when Jeffers latched onto a poor header back by Weston to round Purnell. Unlike Buchanan in the first half, Jeffers managed to get his shot away but he couldn’t find the target with the goal gaping.
With time ticking away Weston won themselves a free kick in injury time that caused a scramble after Fitzsimons failed to get any purchase on his punch, but Haysman thumped it clear.
And in the final minute of five added on at the end of the 90 the home side had one final chance to snatch a winner but Baldwin’s volley from outside the area went straight into the hands of Fitzsimons.
