Sham and Shaun Dispatch Welling United

TWO MORE goals from Shamir Mullings and Shaun Jeffers saw the Clarets claim all three points away at struggling Welling United.

Mullings, who was guilty of missing a number of chances against Oxford 48 hours previously, wasted little time in giving the Clarets the lead as he rounded Chris Lewington to score into the empty net.

It was the striker’s fifth goal of the season and he should have had a sixth when he failed to hit the target from close range, with both Willmott and Jeffers missing good chances to double City’s lead.

The home side brought on Warren Whitely in the second half and put City under a serious amount of pressure missing a couple of chances through Dan Walker and Mitchell Nelson.

But having staved off the home side Jeffers was brought down in the area by Nelson after a melee from a corner, sending Lewington to wrong way with the penalty and securing Chelmsford’s second straight win.

The win was just what the doctor ordered for the Clarets having lost their previous two league games. Despite beating Oxford on Saturday, Clarets boss Rod Stringer was very critical of his side’s wastefulness in front of goal with Shamir Mullings arguably the worst offender missing a number of clear chances.

Mullings though wasted little time in putting thoughts of those missed opportunities to bed as he gave Chelmsford the lead inside five minutes at Park View Road.

A corner from the left was cleared before being recovered by Anthony Church on the half way line. Robbie Willmott saw the run of Mullings and played a first time ball over the top, leaving Mullings to round Chris Lewington and score into an empty net for his fifth goal of the season.

It was the perfect start for the Clarets who went to Welling United without an away win so far this season having lost to St Albans and Maidenhead, and drawing with Truro on the road.

Welling on the other hand had lost all three of their home games thus far and should have been two down when Phil Walsh headed a ball through to Mullings who was onside but failed to hit the target.

The home side had to make do with shots from distance through most of the first half with Harvey Brand having a couple of efforts on goal easily fended off, but City continued to maintain their dominance with Church heading over a corner midway through the half.

Former Claret Jamie Slabber – so often the nemesis of City – had the home side’s best chance when he was picked out by a low cross from the right which was met by Slabber on the volley, but his first time effort went wide from close range.

Chelmsford really stepped on the gas towards the end of the first half and created two great chances to extend their lead, firstly through Willmott.

Ashely Miller and Shaun Jeffers combined well down the right allowing Jeffers to play in a low cross which cut out most of the Welling defence. It looked like Willmott was easily going to side foot the ball in at the far post but under pressure from two recovering defenders he shot wide.

And right at the end of the half Jeffers forced Lewington into a smart save as he was fed by Chris Bush. The Clarets number 10 cut onto his right foot and found space to get his shot away which needed pushing over the bar by Lewington.

Slabber didn’t return for the second half and was replaced by another former Claret Warren Whitely who began the attack that almost brought the home side level.

Whitely sprayed the ball wide to Lyle Della-Verde whose low cross found its way to Dan Walker. Walker though failed to connect properly with the ball allowing Bush back in to desperately clear.

The home side came close once again to an equaliser when Adam Coombes clattered the face of the post from distance. Taking his shot from 25 yards out, City ‘keeper Ross Fitzsimons appeared to leave it thinking it was going wide only to see it smash the woodwork.

Having withstood the home side’s pressure Stringer brought on Corby Moore for Mullings and instantly Moore was involved in the incident which won the Clarets a penalty.

Adam Bailey-Dennis was found unmarked at the far post and his cross missed everyone, eventually making its way to Jeffers who brought a save from Lewington.

From the resulting corner a melee at the far post saw Moore go down claiming for a penalty with the ball bobbling around eventually falling to Jeffers who was brought down by Mitchell Nelson leaving referee Josh Smith to point to the spot – the sixth penalty Welling have given away this season.

Jeffers, the man who was fouled, picked the ball up straight away and confidently send the goalkeeper the wrong way to double City’s advantage, arguably against the run of play.

The stuffing had been well and truly knocked out of the home side with that goal as they failed to really test the Clarets back line who stood firm throughout having withstood some sustained pressure prior to the penalty.

The win sees Chelmsford claim back-to-back wins for the first time this season ahead of two tough home games next weekend against Weston-super-Mare and perennial title contenders Ebbsfleet United.
