Clarets' FA Cup run comes to an end up North
Chelmsford City’s Emirates FA Cup run came to an end on Tyneside as two first-half goals from Gateshead knocked the Clarets out.
Jordan Burrow gave the hosts the lead on the half-hour mark, heading home Wes York’s cross. The lead was doubled four minutes later, Danny Johnson turned quickly in the area before his effort smacked the post and nestled in the opposite corner.
The visitors held their own in the opening stages, however the Tynesiders appeared the more likely to score. Jordan Burrow came close to netting for the hosts after two minutes when he connected with Luke Hannant’s low cross. A block on Burrow’s effort allowed Chelmsford to counter-attack but Matt Johnson was unable to convert as Fraser Kerr remained composed to defend well.
Gateshead had another good chance to score when Neil Byrne nodded down for Burrow, but the midfielder shot well over from close-range. Russell Penn’s low driven shot was then palmed into Byrne’s path by Sam Beasant but the midfielder’s shot was well off-target.
Byrne then did well to deny the Clarets a shot-on-goal. The visitors quickly broke forward through Matt Johnson, the midfielder slid the ball wide to Craig Braham-Barrett and the wide-man’s cross drew a block from Byrne.
City were left ruing their mistakes as moments later the hosts took the lead. Poor marking from the Essex side allowed York to deliver a looping cross which Burrow headed home after reeling away from Michael Spillane.
Four minutes later poor defending from another free-kick allowed Johnson to neatly turn inside the area and cannoned his effort off the left post to nestle his shot in the bottom corner.
A strong long-range shot from Paddy McLaughlin forced a good save from Sam Beasant and a minute later the Clarets were unable to pull a goal-back on the stroke of half-time, with Chris Dickson sending his shot wide after being found unmarked.
City boss Rod Stringer made one change at half-time as he hurled Mike West into the action, moving to have three up-front, and the tactical change almost worked wonders immediately, but Daniel Green had his low shot deflected wide.
Moments later Dickson had another chance to hand City a lifeline, but he was unable to keep his effort low and struck well over.
Byrne almost head the hosts a third goal as his effort bounced wide, although it did not matter as the flag was raised for offside. McLaughlin’s right-wing corners continued to be a threat against the Clarets and they almost increased the hosts’ advantage, but Byrne scooped his shot over from close range.
Spillane came close to engineering a goal for the visitors. The central defender’s Cryuff left Byrne splattered on the floor, his drilled shot towards the far corner was almost tapped home by Lee Barnard but the oncoming striker was unable to connect.
Stringer made his final throw of the dice just past the hour-mark as Barnard was replaced by Tom Hitchcock.
The Clarets continued to press for an elusive lifeline and came close to getting it when Hitchcock dummied a forward pass, allowing Green to drive forward before having his shot well blocked.
As time wore on the Vanarama National League professional status shone through as the Clarets began tiring. A lack of creativity denied the visitors many chances, with the visitors coming closest through Johnson’s weak header.
Johnson continued to prove a hassle for the visitors and he almost grabbed the Heed a third but his shot, from McLaughlin’s threaded pass, struck the side-netting with six minutes left.
The Clarets continued to try and give the 123 travelling supporters something to cheer about but the Essex side’s Emirates FA Cup journey came to an end on Tyneside.
