Clarets remain unbeaten in pre-season schedule
Chelmsford City Football Club cruised to a second pre-season victory following a 3-0 reverse win at Brentwood Town this afternoon.
The Bostik Division One North side held their own against their higher League opposition but Chris Dickson’s 25th minute goal broke the deadlock.
City’s lead was doubled late in the second half when Kudos Oyenuga controlled well, swivelled on the spot before placing his shot into the bottom corner.
Oyenuga then sealed the victory in second half added time as he cut inside and drilled into the bottom left corner.
The hosts started the game the brightest, coming close when Harrison Georgiou beat the offside trap before forcing Sam Beasant into a low save on eight minutes. The pressure continued early on as the home side then hit the post from an in-swinging freekick conceded by Chris Bush, but the Clarets remained on level terms.
Dickson opened the scoring on 25 minutes as he latched onto Jim Stevenson’s weighted pass and kept his composure before placing the ball under Anthony Page.
Six minutes later and the Clarets almost had a second but Stevenson’s attempted lob was caught easily by Page.
Youngster Hugo Skepelhorn almost scored his first goal for City since returning from injury but the academy product was denied by a strong reaction save from the Blues’ goalkeeper, leaving the Clarets just the single goal ahead at half-time.
Andy Freeman hit the crossbar three minutes into the second half, but the hosts could not muster any pressure on the National League South side.
The Clarets had a strong shout for a penalty when Oyenuga was dragged down in the area on 73 minutes, but the visitors’ claims for a spot-kick were waved away.
Stringer’s side hit the crossbar themselves on 78 minutes when Stevenson latched onto Oyenuga’s drag-back, but the midfielder could only watch as his curling effort smacked the bar.
Stevenson’s miss did not matter however, as three minutes later Oyenuga took two quick touches before swivelling on the spot and striking low into the bottom corner.
In what appeared to be a complete domination in the final half-hour, City added a third in added time. Oyenuga received the ball on the edge-of-the-box before cutting inside and sending a low shot creeping past the Brentwood trialist goalkeeper into the bottom left corner.
Next up for the Clarets is a trip to Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday night for Chelmsford’s third pre-season match.
