Clarets beat Thurrock to remain unbeaten
Chelmsford City Football Club extended their unbeaten pre-season record to six games after beating Thurrock 2-1 at Ship Lane.
The Clarets arrived at their Essex neighbours having already beaten Saffron Walden, Brentwood Town, Brightlingsea Regent, Canvey Island and Enfield Town, but travelled to their Bostik Premier opponents for their sixth warm-up fixture.
Rod Stringer’s side quickly showed their superior ability as Kudos Oyenuga’s trickery created the opening goal. The City striker displayed excellent ball control on the touchline before cutting inside, sending a cross to the far post where Kane Haysman calmly volleyed beyond Bobby Mason.
Eleven minutes later and the hosts drew level. Chris Bush was caught out on the edge-of-the-box, dragged down Jordan Clark and the Thurrock man made no mistake from the spot, sending the Clarets’ trialist goalkeeper the wrong way.
The Clarets continued to dominate as the heavens opened at Ship Lane, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third meant the scores remained level.
But, on 69 minutes, the visitors restored their lead. The Clarets broke down the pitch quickly, Chris Dickson found himself out on the wide right and his deep in-swinging cross was headed home by Oyenuga.
Josh Olukolu came close for the hosts on 77 minutes, but his drilled effort after beating the offside trap went just wide.
Michael West almost wrapped up the game two minutes later, but his shot from Craig Braham-Barrett’s pass went marginally wide of the up-right.
Next up for the Clarets is a trip to Stringer’s former employers, Bishop’s Stortford, on Tuesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.
