Haysman goal continues unbeaten pre-season

Chelmsford City extended their unbeaten pre-season run to four games following a 1-0 win at Canvey Island.

Kane Haysman’s goal on 58 minutes proved to be enough as Rod Stringer’s Vanarama National League South beat Canvey Island at The Financial Frost Stadium.

Former Claret Frankie Merrifield had the hosts’ first real attempt on goal, however a low save down to the right from Sam Beasant nullified the effort.

Eight minutes later the hosts thought they had the lead when Callum Ibe drilled Albert Levett’s through-ball past Beasant, however the scores remained level due to the assistant referee’s flag being raised for offside.

The Clarets briefly threatened towards the end of the half, however proceedings were brought to an end with the scoreline level after a tight opening forty-five minutes.

Stringer’s side continued to threaten in the opening encounters of the second half, but neither Lee Barnard nor Shaun Batt could break the deadlock. Batt created an excellent chance to score by crossing to Barnard on 54 minutes but Elliott Warren managed to deny the strikers a goalscoring opportunity.

James Walker was left ruing his missed chance after watching his shot cleared off the line, following David Knight’s cut-back, when the ball was won in midfield by Haysman and the tricky winger drove forward before slotting past Conor Gough.

City almost doubled their lead on 82 minutes when Barnard was inches away from tucking home Michael West’s cross, before the midfielder saw his own shot palmed away by Gough four minutes later.

The hosts had one late chance to equalise against the Clarets but a trialist was unable to convert at the far post as Danny Heale's side were left beaten by City.
