Comeback Sutton end Clarets' unbeaten run
Chelmsford City’s unbeaten pre-season campaign came to an end as they were defeated by Paul Doswell’s Sutton United side 2-1 at Gander Green Lane.
The Clarets had taken the lead through Michael West’s overhead kick on 18 minutes, but two goals in the space of three minutes from Kieron Cadogan saw the Vanarama National League side take a 2-1 lead.
Sutton came close to equalising six minutes after West’s impressive goal, but Anthony Jeffrey was unable to tap home from close range. Cadogan also came close for the hosts but he was unable to keep his curling shot low.
Rod Stringer’s side entered the half-time interval ahead at Gander Green Lane, but the Clarets’ higher league opposition increased the pressure as they went in search of an equaliser.
Nicky Bailey’s free-header from six yards flashed agonisingly wide before Cadogan’s bending shot curved wide of the goal. But the hosts did not have to wait long after their missed chance as Cadogan latched onto a flick-on and bent the ball around the diving Sam Beasant.
Just a minute later the hosts were ahead. Aswad Thomas created a moment of magic on the right wing, beat his City marker and sent a pinpoint cross to Cadogan in the box, leaving the Sutton striker with the simple task of heading home.
The Clarets came close late to equalising on multiple times, but the home side’s superiority showed as Chelmsford were unable to maintain their 100% pre-season record.
