Chelmsford Clarets 0 : 0 Grays
While Grays rarely ventured out of their half they proved to be very stubborn in defence. George & Jim were in control at the back and with Chris in goal they managed to stifle out the occasional threat from Grays. Colin & Mike had several efforts saved well by a busy Grays keeper and with neither Mark nor Peter able to find the back of the net the game finished goalless.

Chelmsford Clarets 0 : 1 Little Oakley
The champions from the previous two seasons clashed in a hard fought encounter with the neither side being able to dominate. The only score of the game came shortly before half time with the Little Oakley forward just managing to get a toe to the ball first to flick it in. With Clarets rallying well and striking the woodwork the match could have gone either way but Little Oakley were more relieved to hear the final whistle and take all the points.

Chelmsford Clarets 0 : 1 Leyton Orient
Next up for Clarets were a Leyton Orient side who are always difficult to break down and again proved resilient. In what was pretty much an end to end game chances fell to both sides with the woodwork keeping out efforts at either end. The ‘O’s took the win with a speculative shot that just squeezed under the keeper and despite increased efforts Clarets were unable to get back on terms.

Chelmsford Clarets 4 : 0 Southend (Friendly)
With their league games having been completed, Clarets finally managed to find their scoring touch. The first goal was slightly contentious as the Southend players were convinced that Mark had strayed into the area to force the ball home but the referee was unmoved. Mark then notched two more and together with a strike from Mike they found themselves 4 – 0 up by half time. Despite several efforts in the second half they were unable to increase their tally and were comfortable winners.

It was obvious from the start that all teams appear to have upped their game and are getting more organised in their approach to the walking football format. Overall it was a disappointing start to the over 60’s EWFL season for the Clarets but taking the positives it would be fair to say that we weren’t outplayed in any of the games and with just a little more luck could have even possibly won all three matches. As we found out to our cost it’s goals that count and sometimes they just don’t go in!
