CLARETS REMAIN UNBEATEN AT THE HALFWAY POINT OF THE SEASON

On a warm day at Eastwood and with only a 7 player squad, Chelmsford City Clarets played 2 friendlies and 2 EWFL games in this tournament played at the Len Forge Centre. Their leading scorer was a late withdrawal from the squad but despite dropping their first points of the season in a draw against Blues, they knuckled down to protect their unbeaten start in the league.

Clarets squad: Mark Elnaugh (GK), Dave Roast, George Keogh, Jim Prophet, Dennis Spencer, Terry Buck, Peter Osborne (C).

Results:-

(Friendly) Eastwood Falcons Blues 1 : 0 Chelmsford Clarets
Most of the chances fell to Clarets who were unable to convert and then midway through the game a speculative long range shot seemed to bend at the last moment to sneak past Mark who hadn’t really been tested up till then.

(League) Chelmsford Clarets 0 : 0 Chelmsford Blues
No quarter was asked or given in this keenly fought league game between the two City sides. The referee was consistently warning the Blues that one more transgression would lead to a 2 minute visit to the sin bin, but he failed to carry out his promise and allowed several more fouls to be merely punished by free kicks. A draw was the eventual predictable outcome despite opportunities for most of the Clarets team which were either squandered or well saved by Bill in goal.

(League) Dagenham & Redbridge 0 : 2 Chelmsford Clarets
Clarets finally managed to find their scoring boots as the team settled down to play some excellent and controlled football. Peter found the back of the net with a solid strike before Terry put the result beyond doubt. George would have added a third but for a superb save from the Daggers keeper, our old friend Chris Jones. Despite his goal, the talking point of the game was Peter finding himself on the edge of the area with only the keeper to beat and for what seemed like an eternity he went left & right trying to find an angle to slot the ball home only to calmly roll the ball to the grateful keeper!

(Friendly) Chelmsford Clarets 1 : 1 Southend Blacks
In the final game Clarets were looking comfortable after Dennis gave us the lead, but then a mix up going forward left us exposed at the back and the Southend forward took full advantage to snatch the equaliser. Despite having a player advantage when a Southend player was sent to the bin for 2 minutes following a late tackle, we were unable to take advantage and this second friendly of the day ended in a draw.

For most of the play throughout the day George & Jim in defence looked in control & with Dave playing in an unaccustomed midfield role the majority of the opposition attacks were snuffed out leaving Mark with a fairly comfortable day. Dennis, Peter & Terry combined well to create plenty of chances and on another day we could have doubled the goals tally.

CHELMSFORD CITY BLUES OUT IN THE SUN IN SOUTHEND

Squad members: Bob Willis, Bill Sedgwick (GK), Bill Harvey, Ian Inglis, Gerry Howard, Terry Owers and Chris Jullings

I did make some brief comments, but I will make a report of our progress to day of our league programme held at Southend. First we had a friendly if that at all possible against Eastwood Falcons we lost 1-0 and dune ourselves proud then we played the leaders Chelmsford Clarets us being the Chelmsford Blues there was a lot of pride at stake and anybody watching would have a great football match somewhat defensive from the blues but we ground out a draw.

Next we played a very good footballing team Leyton Orient and only lost 1-0 our final game was against a spirited Southend which we won in style 2-0 with Chris and Ian our goal scorers in conclusion we kept our shape and our determination and team spirit was great a special thanks to young bill in goal and our manager Gary and Gerry our captain and all the lads in our Squad further there was a great atmosphere of well being generated by England’s success in the world cup
