Walking Football Over 50's Tournament at Margate Football CLUB

Chelmsford Walking Football day at the sea side

The DAVE BAMBRIDGE MEMORIAL CUP is an annual event to raise money for charity. Dave was a local keeper who played for Ramsgate and Margate, he was a fireman who sadly passed away due to cancer and the tournament is in his honour

The format for the event was 4 groups of 6 with each team playing each other once in 15 min, with the top team in each group going in to the semi-finals then final played on the main Margate Football Club. The group stages were all played in cages on 3G surfaces. However, the pitches were in very poor condition and it was surprising that there were signs everywhere that all studded boots were not allowed. Fortunately for Bob Willis, no one checked boots, however there were many other players that somehow missed the signs

Our team was very strong with a good number of players on their way with buckets and spades to the sea side. Well that was the plan in the end we still had a strong side but just seven players playing in a six a side tournament of teams made up of over 50's players from all over the country, not just locals

Clarets Team

Gary Murphy - Team Captain
Ray Barry
Bill Sedgwick
Alan Oliver
Paul Hunt
Tony Busby
Bob Willis - Ball Boy

Clarets played five games, lost two, one draw and two wins with some great goals scored. the most disappointing thing was the variability of the refereeing and the long delays between matches. However, its very difficult for organisers when officials don't turn up and other clubs cancel late

We played the following teams in order

Middlesbrough – Chelmsford 1-1
Watford – Chelmsford 5-0
Ebbsfleet – Chelmsford 3-1
Bexley Boys – Chelmsford 1-1
Maidstone – Chelmsford 0-3

Goal scorers for Clarets were

Paul Hunt 3
Gary Murphy 1
Bob Willis 2 (One of Bob's goals was a toe deflection from a shot by Alan)

Two teams were on weekend holidays to the south east coast in mini buses. They may not have come just for the footy, the weather was very nice with sun tan lotion necessary for some
