Over 65 City WF National Tournament

We all had a wonderful day at this tournament with 9 great teams. The weather was fine and we all played the full 4 hours. It was a full 9 team round robin, so we all played each other.

As Bill Harvey, a “Whites” squad member, reported:

“The Whites won a moral victory. I will start with some stats first. We played eight games drew five and won three. We finished joint third, and I believe only two points separated us from the winners Beccles. Also we did not concede a goal in the whole of the competition. If I have made any mistakes it’s because I feel emotional. Our team in many ways on paper were perhaps one of the outsiders in the competition. But shrewd management, and tactics by our player/manager Kevin, who played excellent throughout, were the foundations for our success. Young Gary in goal was superb and pulled off some great saves. In midfield Spencer was amazing scoring three goals and one assist, but my man of the match was Lance who played at the heart of the defence who also got two assists. I swept behind Lance, and his presence made my task and other defenders like Dave Clarke quite simple. Obviously our forwards in the shape of big Dave Howes who battled for every ball inspired other forwards, Phil and Ashley, to do the same. In conclusion our team spirit and organisation were I believe a moral victory because we beat the champions Beccles and never conceded a goal in a very high standard tournament. I must also thank our very own John Green for refereeing and of course Terry for organising the tournament. We all had a grand day out.”

As Terry Buck, the “Clarets” captain, reported:

Clarets had a reasonable day winning 2 matches, drawing 4 and lost 2. Our lost games were against Beccles, the eventual winners, and the Whites. (It was nice that Bill didn’t rub it in!!) Beccles did have an ex English footballer, Trevor Whymark, in their squad. We all played well individually, with Mark in goal, the 2 Jims and Alec in defence, Peter O and Dennis in midfield and Brian Thomas and Terry up front. It was generally a low scoring day with the most common score of 0-0, as the matches were only of 10 minutes duration due to the number of teams involved. However, on the day we just didn’t gel as a team as well as we do normally although we came close in several games. The goals were shared by Dennis, Brian, Peter and Terry. Both Terry and Alec missed penalties in the match against Southend, but fortunately that didn’t affect the outcome of that match.

We all had a great time and the friendliness and the camaraderie was outstanding. I heard that only 1 blue card was awarded throughout the tournament , but apparently, it was for the player swearing at himself! There was still lots of physical contact even though it was supposed to be non-contact, and some running went unpunished but the referees all did a good job.

I for one am looking forward to more 65 plus tournaments for us oldies!

Thank you everyone.”
