Chelmsford become Essex champions for the fourth year running...!

For the fourth consecutive year we won the County stage of the WFA 60+ competition and will now proceed to the South East regional stage. We’re not totally certain who will be our opponents but we will probably play the winners of the Greater London, City of London, and Middlesex “county” events.

Four teams competed in the Essex stage: Chelmsford, Southend, Romford and Walton. We agreed to play each other twice, 10 minutes per match straight through. We had a very strong and well balanced squad. Our only slight concern was that we did not have a dedicated goalkeeper which meant that goalie duties had to be shared between players. We need not have worried. Great performances in goal by Alec Rose, Brian Topham, Dennis Spencer, George Keogh, Alan Scott and David Roast and solid defending by the same players meant that we only conceded four goals in total! Our other squad members – Terry Buck, Peter Osborne, and David Clarke – who played mainly in midfield and attack, also proved too strong for our opponents; in total we scored 17 goals, including six against Southend in our first game.

Without a doubt this was one of the team’s best ever performances; we won all of our matches and were by far the most organised of all the teams involved. The final results table was as follows:

TEAMPLAYEDWONDREW LOSTGFGAPTS.
Chelmsford660017418
Walton63031079
Romford62046106
Southend61056183

Chelmsford goal scorers:
Terry Buck 6 (including a hat-trick)
Peter Osborne 4
David Roast 3
Brian Topham 3
Dennis Spencer 1

The next (Regional) stage will take place between 1 June and 30 September. The winners of that stage will progress to the Regional finals to be played early October. The winners of the Regional final will compete in the national final on October 29.

Aside from the actual football competition it has become very clear that walking football is contributing a great deal to society as a whole not just in improving the fitness and well being of those who participate but also, and equally importantly, in fostering greater social interaction, as evidenced by the ever growing camaraderie of participants regardless of the teams they represent. Long may it continue!
