Welling Preview (League): Wings travel to Clarets for Festive opener

3 weeks ago By Matt Lee

Chelmsford City hope to begin the Christmas period with a home win as Welling United travel to Essex tomorrow (3pm kick-off).

“Thats two wins and two draws from our last four League games which is great momentum to be taking into the Christmas games.” Rod Stringer

The Clarets enter the festive period having won twice in the previous six League matches, however a 3-0 reverse win in a friendly at Aveley ensured the team remained match fit ahead of three matches in ten days.

City’s opponents, Welling United, sit 15th in the League form table having won just once in six fixtures, a 2-1 victory over St Albans City. The Wings find themselves hovering three points outside the play-off positions and Jamie Coyle will be hopeful of reducing the gap after holding Truro City to a 2-2 draw at Park View Road two weeks ago.

Team news

Rod Stringer will be boosted by the potential return of Lee Barnard and Jonny Giles, with both contending for places within the matchday squad. The Clarets have no players suspended, however a number of players have slight niggles which could affect their availability.

View from the Camp:

Speaking to the matchday programme prior to Welling United’s visit, City boss Rod Stringer said:

“It’s games like the Hungerford one [a 1-1 draw earlier in December] where we really miss the likes of Churchy, which is why I’m so glad he got a run-out at Gloucester following the Essex Senior Cup game.

“We didn’t put in a scintillating display and, I’ll be honest, Gloucester played it around better than us at times but at the end of the season we’ll look back at better performances than that where we’ve lost the game so we’ll take the points from the 2-0 win and move on.

“Thats two wins and two draws from our last four League games which is great momentum to be taking into the Christmas games.”
