REACTION: Rod Stringer - Coggeshall Town (H)

By User 490922

Chelmsford City boss Rod Stringer spoke of his delight after navigating past a tricky Coggeshall Town side in the BBC Essex Senior Cup.

“For me it’s one where we had to come in, get the job done and get into the next round.” Rod Stringer, Manager

The Clarets progressed into the semi-final stage with a 2-1 victory. Aaron Cosgrave scored on his full debut for City before Chris Whelpdale doubled City’s lead in the second half.

Nmandi Nwachuku scored in the final ten minutes of the Cup tie and could have levelled the fixture had he not selfishly shot over, but Rod Stringer was pleased as his side confirmed their place in the draw.

“I know it wasn’t going to be easy they’re a good side.” He said. “They work hard, play well and have good pace.

“You have to give credit to them [Coggeshall], they played really well and made a good go of it.

“The only negative is how we conceded a sloppy goal. We should’ve gone 3-0 up but they go up the other end and score.

“I’m pleased to be in the next round because it’s a cup I do take seriously, it’s a decent competition. Some teams go weak in it but that’s up to them.

“Fairplay to Coggeshall, they gave a good game of it.

“Cup football is all about getting into the next round. It was never going to be 5-0 or 6-0 because they’re too good a side for that. They were a threat all night.”

Stringer was forced to make a number of changes in order to allow various members of his first-choice squad a chance to rest, but it proved to be a good workout for players on the fringe of breaking into the first team.

“We’ve made seven changes tonight, but it’s been great for my players." said Stringer.

"Chris Greegan came in, Aaron Cosgrave has come in and scored which has done him no harm, it’s given Mikhail [Kennedy] and Amos [Nasha] ninety minutes.

“The only ones who played Saturday were Nathan McDonald, Tom Wraight, Adrian Cascaval and Matthew Young.

“Pretty much apart from that it was a new team. We only had four players on the bench, that shows depleted we are because we have so many players coming off the back of a busy Christmas who are just so tired.

“For me it’s one where we had to come in, get the job done and get into the next round.”
