“The board felt it only right that Kevin should be given the opportunity to remain as caretaker manager until the end of the season and I am delighted he has accepted the offer.”
Trevor Smith, Chairman
The Southend United legend, who amassed 454 appearances in his decade at Roots Hall, will remain in charge of the Clarets until the end of the 2015/16 campaign, following the departure of Mark Hawkes last month.
The Clarets are currently above the relegation zone on goal difference heading into Saturday’s tough away trip to Weston-super-Mare before welcoming local rivals Bishop’s Stortford to the Melbourne Community Stadium on Monday night.
And Maher, who is also in charge of Southend’s Under 21 side, a role that will not affect his job with the Clarets, will now take over affairs having been in interim charge for the Clarets’ last three home matches that have resulted in one win and two defeats.
Chairman Trevor Smith issued his full backing of Maher as the Clarets look to retain their National League South status, and said: “With the changes Kevin has made both on and off the pitch the board felt it only right that Kevin should be given the opportunity to remain as caretaker manager until the end of the season and I am delighted he has accepted the offer.
"This will give the Club, the players and Kevin himself some stability until the end of the season."
Steve Smith will also remain as Maher's assistant.
