East Thurrock United Preview: Clarets aim to end draw spell

1 week ago By Matt Lee

Chelmsford City look to end a run of three draws as they host Essex rivals East Thurrock United at the Melbourne Community Stadium tonight.

“Those six or seven points that we aren’t putting on the board at the moment could come back and haunt us.” Rod Stringer

The Rocks make the short trip to Chelmsford on the back of two consecutive draws against Wealdstone and Oxford City. John Coventry - the Manager of the Month winner for August - ended the month unbeaten having won five of his seven League matches and their unbeaten run has continued into September with two draws.

The Clarets, meanwhile, have lost just once at home but found victories hard to come by in recent matches having dropped points from winning positions in their last two matches (away to Hampton & Richmond Borough and then at home to Weston-super-Mare) while having not defeated Bognor Regis Town at the start of the month.

Team news

Chelmsford City continue to play without Michael Spillane (ankle), while Max Porter remains sidelined due to a toe injury sustained in pre-season. Jonny Giles and Shaun Batt could face returns to the squad having improved fitness.

Speaking ahead of the visit of one of the Clarets’ local rivals, City boss Rod Stringer said:

“21 points from 10 games is over 2 a game. If we had what we should have got from the past two games then we could have been six or seven points clear. Those six or seven points that we aren’t putting on the board at the moment could come back and haunt us.

“We have had one day rest before coming back again. You, the crowd, need to stick with us as we try to find a formula to win more than we lose. Draws in this League are as bad as defeats, especially at home. We never really asked the question and put teams to bed and that is what we need to begin doing.”
