Six-goal City ease into Quarter Finals

Chelmsford City's dominant performance over Bowers & Pitsea ensured further progression in the BBC Essex Senior Cup.

A brace of penalties from Kudus Oyenuga, a brace from Matthew Johnson, a late strike from Christopher Dickson and an emphatic finish from Mark Haines allowed Chelmsford City to progress to the Quarter-Finals stage of the BBC Essex Senior Cup.

The Clarets took an early lead when Jamie Dicks fouled Michael West inside the area, Oyenuga stepped up and calmly notched the opening goal as he converted his sixth goal of the season.

Ten minutes later the hosts came close to levelling twice. John Easterford's header from Lewis Clarks long throw struck the post and then Easterford forced a good save from Beasant from the resulting corner.

Johnson showed glimpses of his threat when, after 25 minutes, he shot wide from range, coming closest during a period of City dominance. Oyenuga came close to doubling Chelmsford's lead when he rounded two players but was dispossessed when attempting to round a third Bowers player.

The hosts continued to look dangerous from set-pieces, but Jamie Salmon's free-kick almost found Easterford unmarked at the far post.

But City's lead was soon doubled as the Clarets won a second penalty. Clark handled the ball in the area and Oyenuga extended Chelmsford's lead by driving his spot-kick beyond Callum Chafer into the top right-hand corner.

Bowers had a half-chance to score towards the end of the half, however Tony Stokes' low shot was blocked well by Chris Smith.

Shaun Batt's effort was held comfortably by Chafer and the hosts then came close to scoring but Usman Adeniji's volley was blocked by City.

Ben Sartain sent Adeniji through-on-goal and the winger took a touch wide before delivering a cross into Beasant's hands. The hosts were left ruining their missed chances as three minutes later Matt Johnson added to the defecit.

Oyenuga created space on the wing before drilling a cross into the box, Johnson reacted quickest and moved himself in order to provide the final touch as City scored their third.

The scoreline was soon 0-4 as Johnson capitalised on a loose ball from Luke Daley's cross, guiding the inch-perfect delivery beyond Chafer.

With City cruising in their position, Clarets boss Rod Stringer opted to provide minutes to Dickson and Christian Assombalonga: with Batt and Oyenuga's match-time coming to an end with twenty minutes left on the clock.

Four minutes after City's change in personnel and the Clarets' lead was extended even further. Defender Mark Haines executed a striker's finish to score just his fifth goal in 283 appearances. The experienced player beat three Bowers players before slotting into the bottom corner.

Stokes had the chance to grab a consolation goal for the hosts with seven minutes left, however the striker shot over.

With time running out, there was still enough time for substitute Dickson to score a sixth and final goal for City. The Clarets striker reeled away from his marker and nodded home Daniel Green's corner from an unmarked position, securing City's spot in the quarter-finals of the BBC Essex Senior Cup.
