Wealdstone Replay Preview: Clarets prepare for tough FA Trophy Replay

11 months ago By Matt Lee

Chelmsford City and Wealdstone will battle for a place in the Buildbase FA Trophy First Round tonight (7.30pm) at the Melbourne Community Stadium.

“We’ll be looking to finish the job tonight: I take this competition very seriously, as you saw last season” Rod Stringer

Rod Stringer’s Clarets had to come from a goal-behind on Saturday to steal a replay, with Shaun Batt’s 80th minute header levelling the scores after Sam Cox had been dismissed earlier in the second half for the hosts.

City will be hoping that a good performance against their fellow Vanarama National League South opposition will ensure progression to the next round, where they would host Wingate & Finchley.

Chelmsford enjoyed a successful run in the FA Trophy last season, beating Taunton Town, Hitchin Town and fellow Vanarama National League South side Dartford before finally being beaten by Tranmere Rovers 4-1 in a replay.

However Bobby Wilkinson’s side proved a difficult outfit to break down at the weekend, with the hosts holding the lead for eighty minutes prior to substitute Batt’s sublime header.

The Stones, managed by former Hungerford Town boss Bobby Wilkinson, sit eleventh in the League - three points outside the play-offs - following a turn in form which has seen them lose just three times since Wilkinson’s appointment.

Tonight’s game will progress to extra-time and penalties if required.

Team news

Michael Spillane will be unavailable for the Clarets due to picking up a fifth yellow card of the season on Saturday. Lee Barnard sat-out the mid-week draw through injury, while Jonny Giles and Anthony Church remain sidelined with injuries.

Sam Cox, who was sent off for the hosts on Saturday, is available to play due to his suspension beginning in the Stones’ match this weekend against Braintree Town.

View from the City Camp:

Speaking in the match programme (£2.50), City boss Rod Stringer thought that his side gave a good account of themselves on Saturday, but is hopefully of being on the winning side tonight.

"We had the upper hand but a poor decision by the linesman - who gave a corner when the ball had clearly not gone over the line - saw Wealdstone take the lead." he said.

"We kept ourselves in the game and the two substitutions were key, with Danny Green putting the ball over for Shaun Batt to score with a great header. Luke Daley also came back into the side and gave a good account of himself, offering us a different option down the right side.

"It just goes to show that, when we have everyone available and injury-free, we have decent strength in depth in the squad.

"We’ll be looking to finish the job tonight: I take this competition very seriously, as you saw last season when we had a decent run before going out to Tranmere Rovers in a replay."
