Clarets left disappointed in Oxford

Chelmsford City’s promotion credentials took a blow as Oxford City won 2-0 at Marsh Lane.

A brace for the Hoops’ on-loan striker, Sam Nombe, secured three points for the hosts as City were left embarrassed in Oxfordshire.

Clarets Boss Rod Stringer named an unchanged side to the team that beat Weston-super-Mare 1-0 on Tuesday, with Bagasan Graham returning from injury to take Daniel Green’s place in the starting eleven, as he hoped to maintain pressure on the League leaders.

The Clarets came close to netting twice early on, but Phil Roberts headed over before Anthony Church’s headed effort was cleared off the line by Eddie Jones.

Oxford immediately initiated a counter when Craig Braham-Barrett lost the ball cheaply in midfield, allowing Nombe to drive forward and drill a low shot past Sam Beasant to open the scoring after seven minutes.

The hosts continued to dominate the opening stages, however they were unable to extend their advantage as Matt Patterson struck over from a free-kick and Freddie Grant curled into Sam Beasant’s hands.

City came close to levelling when Taylor Miles’ corner was flicked across goal, but Roberts was unable to head home at the far post. The City striker came close again a minute later, his header flew off-target though.

Midway through the first half Oyenuga connected with Miles’ clever pass, however his shot from a tight angle was held by Craig King.
Reece Fleet then had a chance of his own for the hosts, although his shot was deflected wide.

The Clarets threatened to level just before the break, but Miles curled a freekick agonisingly wide of the post. Grant was then forced into acting quickly as he flicked Graham’s cross away from Roberts.

City made a double change at half-time as they looked to get back into the game; Miles and Kudus Oyenuga were replaced by Scott Davies and Shaun Batt.

The second half started brightly for City, showing glimpses of potential as Roberts turned into space and shot wide.

However, two minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead. Substitute Davies failed to deal with the danger and lost the ball to Nombe. The on-loan striker burst forward and instinctively fired past Beasant from just inside the bow.

Oxford City should have doubled their lead on 54 minutes, however a great save from Sam Beasant denied Matt Paterson from close-range.

Chelmsford tried to grab a goal back, although their efforts were weak and came without any reward. Giles scuffed a shot wide before Roberts flicked just over.

Anthony Church tested King from range, but it was an easy save for the hosts’ shot-stopper, Davies then shanked a shot well over the bar from distance.

Giles headed into Kings’ hands from close-range as the game entered it’s final fifteen minutes.

Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain almost wrapped up the three points for Oxford City with twelve minutes remaining. But, after cutting inside, he curled his shot high and wide. Substitute Ezra Forde then struck the side netting as the hosts looked to extend their lead.

Davies’ deep cross in added time was headed down by Batt, but it was another poor effort that rounded off a bad day at the office for Chelmsford City as they were beaten 2-0.
