Late Hungerford equaliser frustrates Clarets
Chelmsford City were left rueing multiple missed chances as Hungerford scored a late goal to salvage a point in Essex.
The hosts took the lead after six minutes of the first half when Michael Spillane converted Chris Dickson’s header which struck the bar.
The Clarets continued to dominate the early stages but could not further their lead. Green’s fierce connection to Graham’s cross was dramatically blocked on the edge-of-the-box, then Hitchcock spun a shot agonisingly wide from Spillane’s knock-down.
Hungerford came close to levelling when a visiting player had their header beyond Beasant, only to have Green smash the ball away off-the-line. Then Clark came close, cutting inside before firing a shot into Beasant’s hands.
City edged themselves into a dominating position towards the end of the half, however the closest they came was when Hitchcock glanced a searching cross wide of the left post.
The second half started brightly for the hosts, but Green was unable to capitalise on some poor defending when he struck into the side netting from just a few yards out. Hungerford then came close when a teasing left-wing cross found its way into the box, however City got a vital touch and cleared the danger away.
Chelmsford continued to search for a second goal to consolidate their position however they were unable to convert their numerous chances. Dickson’s decision to pass inside to West proved a waste, then Miller’s strong shot was blocked from close range. Hungerford continued to press also, however, with the visitors looking most likely to score from a set-piece.
Substitute Assombalonga was deemed offside moments after he came on, however his shot hardly troubled Beauchamp as it dribbled wide anyway. The visitors came close twice late-on, however Beasant did well to save a low effort to his right before then palming a fierce shot over for a corner.
With five minutes left on the clock, the visitors finally equalised. Chelmsford were caught sleeping in defence and a drilled cross was rifled home by Meechan as Hungerford salvaged a late point.
