Clarets reach Semi-Finals in BBC Essex Senior Cup

Chelmsford City progressed to the semi-finals of the BBC Essex Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over a young Colchester United side.

Shaun Batt’s 82nd-minute volley secured the Clarets’ spot in the final four after an even first half proceeded a turgid second.

City boss Rod Stringer was forced to name a depleted squad for his visit to the Weston Homes Community Stadium, with just fourteen players available for selection due to various injuries and illnesses.

The visitors could have taken an early lead when Jonathan Giles headed Mike West’s header against the bar before having his rebound smothered by Rene Gilmartin. Shortly afterwards Michael Spillane’s darting run saw him pass to Barnard who teed-up Daniel Green, however the final shot was off-target.

Courtney Senior created a chance for the hosts when he attacked down the right-wing. The tricky winger easily beat Bagasan Graham in a foot-race before watching Sam Beasant fumble his left-footed shot, the City goalkeeper quickly recovered thought to stop the ball from trickling over the line.

Having struck the bar inside two minutes, Colchester United then struck the bar themselves as a central free-kick was pushed against the crossbar by Beasant before going out for a corner.

The entertaining beginning to the game set an early precedence for an end-to-end game however it was not to continue as a string of misplaced passes and unforced errors allowed neither side to take a foothold in the fixture.

Senior pulled the ball inside to Tariq Issa however his shot curled just wide of the post, Charley Edge then had a shot himself after cutting inside Haines but it flew wide.

Giles sent West’s through ball towards goal late in the first half however his effort was comfortably held by Gilmartin before Spillane played a heavy pass down the left wing which Lee Barnard failed to keep on the pitch.

JJ Wilson stung Beasant’s gloves early in the second half before Issa shot wide three minutes later but still neither side could take the lead.

City looked the more likely to score as they were at least creating chances in the second half, whereas the visitors’ resolute defence was doing an excellent job at limiting the U’s to just long-range shots.

Stringer’s first rotation of the evening came just past the hour mark when Giles was replaced by Shaun Batt, with City in search for an elusive goal. Three minutes City made their second change as Anthony Church came on for Matthew Johnson while the hosts also made a double change.

The Clarets’ final change of the game came with fourteen minutes left on the stopwatch as Chris Smith took a defensive midfielder role in-front of the defensive quartet.

Substitute Decarrey Sheriff tested City’s awareness when his speed allowed him to beat the offside trap however his low cross was cut out comfortably by Spillane.

City had a loud claim for a penalty when a long-range shot seemed to strike a hand before the ball fell to West who struck wide.

However, City took the lead two minutes later when the Clarets took advantage of a defensive error. Edge miskicked the ball on the half-way line which dumfounded his team-mate Wilson, Green stole the ball and delivered into the box where Batt excellently volleyed beyond Gilmartin from close-range.

Colchester twice came close to levelling before the break as substitute Allarakhia curled wide before Sheriff selfishly sent a shot off-target, but it was the Clarets who progressed into the semi-finals of the BBC Essex Senior Cup for a second consecutive season.
