Chelmsford City 0-3 A.F.C. Wimbledon, Saturday 20th January 2007, Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre, Kick-Off 3:00pm, Ryman League Premier Division.
A full Match Report will appear here shortly..... A second-half double from substitute Steve Goddard condemned City to their first home League defeat of the season in emphatic style at Melbourne. The young striker, a replacement brought on just after the half-time interval, netted twice to add to Roscoe D’Sane’s 36th-minute strike which sent Jeff King’s Clarets down to third. The Manager kept faith with the same side that lost in controversial circumstances to Bromley the previous weekend, meaning Fiston Manuella was still missing from the midfield through injury. In the opening stages, Kezie Ibe was denied a City penalty while at the other end Luke Garrard saw his ten-yard shot deflected onto the crossbar and over for Wimbledon. Dons keeper Andy Little came to the rescue to deny Ibe again at his feet on 24 minutes and a Ricky Holmes floated ball from the right was passed from Jeff Minton to Mario Noto who fired low and narrowly wide. The away side squandered a golden chance on the half-hour mark when Steve Ferguson was clean through on goal and didn’t make it count but they opened the scoring through D’Sane nine minutes prior to the break whose angled effort found the bottom corner. Goddard was introduced a few minutes into the second half and was quick to find the net as he contested City ‘keeper Richard McKinney for the ball on the ground and came out on top to fire into the top corner of the goal in the 53rd minute. City’s quick response arrived through Dwain Clarke who suffered the same fate as Garrard earlier in striking the crossbar. McKinney later rushed from his goal to bravely thwart Goddard but he could do little about the youngster’s excellent 81st-minute third, a sweet curler from the edge of the box that sent the away supporters home happy.
